Can you fish in the Vejle River?
Vejle Å is a fantastic stream to fish in and along. Here you can catch large sea trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. The stream winds through the scenic Vejle Ådal and is easily accessible to anglers. The fishing rights are primarily operated by the Vejle Sportsfiskerforening, while the upper reaches are offered by the Lihmskov-Bindeballe Lystfiskerforening.
If you are fishing with spin, a classic 9' foot spinning rod is perfect. A relatively low casting weight is preferable if you are fishing with wobblers as they do not weigh much. I have used a 9' foot Shimano spinning rod with a casting weight of 3-15 grams for many years. It can be an advantage to find a rod with a top action, so that you have a stiff bottom that can be used to put pressure on the sea trout if it burrows into the mush. A sensitive top makes it possible to feel the vibrations from the wobbler's wiggling gait or the careful bites on the worm. You can also easily use a rod with a casting weight of 5-25 grams.
If you are fishing with nylon line, 0.28 mm is recommended. It has a breaking strength that can handle most fish and at the same time you can get your bait free of weeds and debris without breaking the line. If you prefer, like most people, to fish with braided line, then it can be 0.12-0.14 mm. You can use 0.26-0.33 fluorocarbon as a leader line if you prefer.
Popular baits for Vejle River
During the day, fish with classic river baits, such as Rapala, Vibrax, Mepps and Karl K spinners. Wobblers are most effectively practiced by casting across the river and letting it fish towards its own bank with the force of the current. Spinners are cast upstream and fished quickly downstream in the channels and along crop belts. Fish the spinner a little faster than the current. It is advantageous to let the spinner sink for a few seconds before starting the retrieve in the deeper stretches of the river.
Vejle Å's many sea trout also have a weakness for worms. It can be particularly effective at high water levels, but also at high sun and low water. It can be done with a plug, but I find it most effective to fish with a circle hook, split shot, Chinese-red wool thread and a bunch of earthworms. I fish it as a drift worm - that is a few single split shots and then cast upstream and keep contact with the worm, so you can feel when the fish picks up the bunch of worms and munch on it.
Vejle River is very suitable for both spin and fly fishing. Some stretches are a little better suited for fly fishing than others, but it can generally be practiced all over the river.
If you are fishing with fly tackle, we recommend a one-handed rod in class #5-7 depending on temperament. The large and heavy night flies require a rod with a little more power, while a light foam beetle or wet fly can be presented elegantly with a class 5 rod. I personally use a 9'6 #6 Winston Air2 and a 10' #5 G.Loomis NRX+. The extra length often makes it possible to reach all the way beyond the reeds along the bank. You can also use light switch tackle if you prefer this.
During the day, fly fishing is done with a sinktip line, while many prefer a floating WF for night fishing that is done close to or even on the surface. At night, black or dark flies are used.
Local patterns such as the Kosten and Turbokosten are popular, but in recent years, MV-disc flies with rubber legs have gained popularity. Many also prefer Karup classics such as the Nieren and the Äselet. The flies can be varied from 3-15 cm in length. A leader of one rod length makes it easier to handle the very large tube flies, which absorb a lot of water and therefore weigh a lot.
Availability
Vejle Å stretches from its source at Engelsholm Sø and flows into Vejle Fjord on the southern side at Ibæk Strandvej. Large parts of the stream are open for angling through Vejle Sportsfiskerforenin, while a smaller section is accessible via Randbøldal. Day passes can be purchased at fiskekort.dk . There is also a section of Vejle Å owned by the Danish Forest and Nature Agency that can be fished for free. The most popular sections are zones 2, 4, 5 and 6. The most sought-after section is called Nørreager (Zone 6). This section is only accessible to members of Vejle Sportsfiskerforening and there are also some daily restrictions to limit fishing pressure. A fishing license is required to fish in Vejle Å. You can buy a day license for 141,- DKK for adults and 79,- DKK for juniors. If you want to become a member of the local association, It costs DKK 1,770 for a year's membership in the Vejle Sports Fishing Association.
When is fishing allowed in Vejle River?
Fishing in Vejle Å is permitted from April 1 to October 31 for members of the associations. Any form of fishing in the river outside this period is prohibited.
