Flies - a necessity for fly fishing

Flies are artificial baits, or bait if you will, that imitate insects, fish, larvae, small animals and other natural food items for fish, and are used for fly fishing, e.g. when fishing for trout, salmon and walleye, but also for fishing for predatory fish such as pike or sea bass.

IfNordic AnglersFind a wide variety of flies for fishing. We have flies in every conceivable type, size and color and for every purpose and type of fishing. All our flies have one thing in common: they are of high quality, so you are guaranteed the best equipment for your next fishing trip, no matter where or what you are fishing for.

Large selection of different flies

There are a multitude of different types of flies. It all depends on what you want to catch and what type of fly you should use.

For example, you can usedry flies, which mimic floating insects on the water surface. These fishing flies are typically used to catch fish that rise to take insects. These can be trout and stalling.

There are alsonymphs, which are flies that imitate insects in their larval or pupal form underwater. These are used if you are fishing for fish that are close to the bottom, such as rainbow trout and brown trout. There are alsowet flies, which imitate dead insects floating in the water. These are suitable for fishing in the middle water layer if you are trying to catch perch or pike, for example.

There are also so-called mini flies, which are small, artificial flies that imitate very small insects. These are suitable if you are fishing for fish that only eat small insects, or if you are fishing in clear water where the fish may be frightened by larger baits.

Finally, there are also black flies that create a clear silhouette under different lighting conditions, making them visible to fish in both clear and murky water. Black flies are therefore popular among anglers for both day and night fishing.evening and night fishing.

Get help choosing the right fly at Nordic Anglers

There is a large selection of different flies and the type you need depends entirely on what type of fish you want to catch and under what conditions you are fishing - including the depth of the water, the season and much more.

Choosing fishing flies can therefore seem confusing, even for experienced fishermen. You are therefore always very welcome tocontact usif you need advice, guidance or inspiration about flies for fishing.

High-quality fishing flies are essential for your fishing experience

When it comes to fly fishing, the fishing flies you use are crucial to whether or not you catch a fish. It almost goes without saying, as the flies are designed to mimic the fish's natural food, and if the flies don't look like something the fish can recognize, they won't bite the hook.

However, a good fly should not only resemble the insects and prey that the fish naturally eat, it should also be durable. Cheap or poorly made flies can tend to break easily – after just a few casts or a single catch. That is why all of our flies that you will find on this page are made of strong materials so that they last longer.

We have also taken great care to ensure that our flies have a lifelike design in terms of shape, size, colors and structure and that they move realistically in the water. All our flies are also equipped with sharp and stronghooksthat does not easily bend or break under pressure.

The flies you find on this page are only what we would use for fly fishing ourselves. They increase the probability of catching and ensure you a better fishing experience, free from the frustration of bad gear.

Things to keep in mind when using flies for fishing

Fly fishing is a slightly different type of fishing compared to, for example, spinning or bottom fishing, which are generally more accessible and easier to learn than fly fishing. Fly fishing is nevertheless both fun and challenging, as it requires you to both observe and adapt to the behavior of the fish, and requires a bit more technique and finesse than other types of fishing.

When using fishing flies, whether they are mini flies, black flies, wet flies or something else entirely, it is important that you choose flies that imitate the food items that the fish you want to catch would normally eat. Fish respond best to something they can recognize. Some flies are better for specific species of fish, such as salmon and trout, and there may be a difference between flies designed for saltwater and flies designed for freshwater. This is also something you need to be aware of.

At Nordic Anglers we love fly fishing! If you have any questions about fishing flies, you are always welcome to contact us.

Fly fishing takes practice to master

Fly fishing is generally more difficult and complicated than spinning and bottom fishing. It requires a special technique and movement to master this form of fishing. This is one of the things that makes fly fishing so challenging, but also exciting. If this is your first time using flies for fishing, you will probably find that it requires some practice and training before you master the technique.

First of all, you need to learn how to place the fly you are using in the water.Dry fliesshould, hence the name, be placed on the surface, while wet flies should sink. In addition, there are also mini flies, black flies, etc., all of which can have different ways of being used.

Once you have that down, we get to the hard part, which requires practice. Your fly rod technique affects how the fly moves and thus your chances of getting a bite. Learn to make the fly look like a natural food source by moving it.the fly rodThis can take time – especially at the beginning.

You must of course also make sure that yourfishing rod, lineandforeclosuresuitable for the type of fly you are using.

For many anglers, fly fishing is not just about catching fish. It's about technique and about designing the flies themselves, and about adapting them to your own needs and the surroundings you're fishing in. It's a combination of craftsmanship, creativity and practice – yes, fly fishing is actually a bit of an art form!
