Originally, feathers from the now rare Spey Cock roosters of the Spey River Valley in Scotland were ideal for these flies. However, as the Spey Cock population diminished and legal protections limited the use of heron species feathers traditionally employed in such flies, the need arose for high-quality substitutes.

Whiting has developed a "genetic" Spey Hackle through dedicated selection over several years, combining traits such as long, substantial barbs without webbing, robust non-brittle feathers, and excellent density, ensuring great value to fly tiers. This genetic stock comes in an array of natural and dyed colors to inspire creativity, along with a range of feather sizes suitable for various fly sizes. These feathers excel particularly as front or palmer hackles on streamers and salmon flies.
